What Are the Basic Principles of Movable Dams and Flap Gates in Domestic Air-Cushioned Shield Sluices?

What is the basic working principle of the movable flap gate for domestic air shield gates? Do practitioners in the industry have a clear understanding? Today we will explain it in detail for your reference.
The most widely used type is the hydraulic automatic flap gate, which operates based on lever balance and rotational motion. Specifically, it balances hydraulic force and the gate's own weight, and regulates water levels with the help of an additional damping feedback system.

When the upstream water level rises, the gate gradually rotates around the horizontal shaft to open and discharge water. Conversely, as the upstream water level drops, the gate closes gradually to store water, keeping the water level within the designed range at all times.
For instance, the roller-linkage flap gate is a double-pivot gate equipped with connecting rods. It consists of panels, supporting legs, piers, rollers and connecting rods. It automatically opens and closes under hydraulic force in response to water level changes of domestic air shield gates.
When the upstream inflow increases and the water level rises, the moment produced by hydrodynamic pressure acting on the pivot exceeds the combined moments from the gate's weight and various damping forces. The gate will automatically open to a certain inclination angle. It maintains this position and reaches a new balance when the moment of hydrodynamic pressure equals that of the gate weight. The opening angle stays constant if the flow rate remains unchanged.
When the upstream flow decreases to a certain level, the moment from the gate weight outweighs the moments generated by hydrodynamic pressure and damping forces. The hydraulic automatic flap gate will close back to a specific angle and achieve a new steady state accordingly.
That concludes our introduction to the two types of dam structures for domestic air shield gates. We hope this explanation is helpful to you.
